In March 1937, Mrs. Lizzie Shaw gathered thirteen children together in Pittsburgh's Chinatown
to establish the Pittsburgh Chinese Mission. Following its inception, the Mission gradually
expanded to the point of being formally registered and established as the Pittsburgh Chinese
Church in 1980. Throughout its history the Church has remained an independent, interdenominational
and evangelical church.
The Church has been holding regular Sunday worship services since 1965. Sermons were initially
preached mainly in Mandarin and translated into English and Cantonese. However, due to an increase
in English-speakers, the Church established separate English and Chinese services in 1991 and met
once a month in a combined service to take Holy Communion together.
The church purchased the Perrysville church building in 1984, which provided a relatively fixed
gathering place for its ever-increasing spiritual and social activities and we held worship
services there every week. Starting in March 1995, the church began to hold evangelical worship
services every Sunday afternoon in Oakland to bring the Gospel to the people there as well.
In 1997, we began to feel deeply that if we wanted to engage in outreach to Chinese people,
we needed to move closer to where they were concentrated, and to a safer area where there was
more convenient parking, ample space for activities and more evangelical opportunities. After
many years of searching, devotion, and offering, God miraculously granted us a 37,000 square
feet building on five acres of beautiful hilltop land in 2001. In remembrance of 19 years of
God's grace at our Perrysville church and to harmonize its name in Chinese with the way the
Perry Highway address sounds, we named the new church "Abundant Grace." We are grateful for
God's grace in bestowing and entrusting us with this.
PCC exists to glorify God by quickly establishing their
members in the faith and worship of the one true God through Jesus Christ
and training them to be disciple makers so that they might with the cooperation
of other Christians effectively reach out to all the Chinese and other people
with God's gospel in the greater Pittsburgh area as well as in other parts
of the world.
Definitions
- By quickly we mean that our efforts are concentrated, purposed
and strategic.
- By establish we mean that Christians are not only acquainted
with the knowledge of the truth of Jesus Christ but increasingly find the
God's joy, love and power released through the Spirit bringing God's Word
alive in their lives.
- By training we mean equipping of the saints all levels of whether
it be for new Christians, established Christians or Christians whom God
is leading into full-time ministry.
- By cooperation we mean that we see ourselves not as the church
but only as part of the church of God, and expect that since God's love
is intentionally large, that He will expect us to work with other Christians
to reach the whole city and eventually the whole world with the truth and
love of Jesus Christ.
- By effectively we mean that within 3 months of coming to Pittsburgh
that each Chinese has been showered with the prayers, love and truth of
Jesus Christ by a thriving cell group.
- By other we mean that we accept God's intention for us to be
a purposeful witness to others of Asian descent as well as those of non-Asian
background.
We believe that the BIBLE is the inspired
Word of God, the revelation of His will for the salvation of men, and the
Divine and Final Authority for all Christian faith and life.
We believe in one GOD who is the Creator
and Supreme Ruler of the Universe, the heavens, the earth, and all the
things therein; and who eternally exists in three persons: Father, Son,
and the Holy Spirit.
We believe that MEN were created in the
image and likeness of God, but in Adam all men have fallen into sin, and
as sinners men are in need of God's salvation.
We believe in Salvation and Justification through faith in JESUS
CHRIST. All who turn from their sins and receive Him by faith as
Lord and Savior are justified wholly on the ground of His shed blood and
are born anew of the HOLY SPIRIT into the
family of God, and brought into the Kingdom of His Son.
We believe that the CHURCH is one body,
of which Jesus Christ is the Head, and is composed of all who are regenerated
by the Holy Spirit. The duty of the Church is to proclaim through word
and deeds, the Gospel of Salvation to the World, and to nurture the spiritual
growth of members through prayer, teaching, fellowship, and worship.
